You're Not the Boss of Me

When you were a child, did you ever say, "you're not the boss of me"?

I knew kids that said it all the time. I certainly said it.

Why did we make this distinction? Well, it communicated a couple of things:

  1. We fundamentally don't like to be told what to do. We prefer to decide for ourselves. Autonomy has been a value for most of us for most of our lives. In fact, in Daniel Pink's book DRIVE: The Surprising Truth to What Motivates Us, he suggests that Autonomy one of four major motivational influencers for everyone.
  2. We like to project confidence in ourselves and our ability.
Little has changed since we were children. We *still* like to preserve our autonomy, and countless clients have shared that their goal is to develop more confidence.

I'm not the boss of you.

Your boss isn't even the boss of you.

Valuing your autonomy and cultivating confidence is 100% in your wheelhouse. And it's up to you to develop these qualities, if you chose to do so.

So now I'm curious...

What's one thing that would change if you created more autonomy for yourself?

What's would feeling 10% more confident do for you?
